As spring testing season approaches, many juniors at our school are preparing to take the ACT. One of the most widely accepted college entrance exams in the United States. While the test can feel intimidating, understanding its structure and purpose can help students approach it with confidence.
The ACT measures skills in English, math, reading, and science reasoning, with an optional writing section. Colleges use ACT scores as one factor in admissions decisions, alongside GPA, extracurricular involvement, recommendation letters, and personal essays. Although many schools have adopted test-optional policies in recent years, strong ACT scores can still strengthen applications, qualify students for scholarships, and demonstrate college readiness.
Preparation is key. Experts recommend that students begin studying several months in advance using practice tests, review books, or online resources. Time management is especially important, as the ACT is a fast-paced exam that challenges students to work efficiently under pressure. Taking full-length practice tests can help students build stamina and become familiar with the format.
Lincoln-Way West offers many opportunities to practice such as West Test Day and sessions before and after school in the Warriors Lodge now through April to prepare for the school day test on April 15.
