At the start of every school year, we welcome in a brand-new class of freshmen to Lincoln-Way West. Beginning high school is a daunting experience, and most can remember the unique combination of nerves, excitement, and uncertainty they felt as ninth graders. This year, several freshmen were interviewed about the aspects of West that have surprised them, the parts that are the best, and how they plan on getting involved in different activities.
When asked about parts of West they weren’t expecting, the freshmen had varying answers. One “wasn’t expecting how nice and supportive” peers and teachers would be. Another said she was surprised by the amount of homework, having more than she had anticipated. Freshman Kenna Carlson wasn’t expecting “how fun it is.” Valentina Reyes answered that she was surprised by “how far the classes are.”
What have freshmen most enjoyed in their first month here at West? Leah Denton likes “seeing her friend group” and the number of activities offered. Many gave similar answers, bringing up seeing friends, the school’s activities, and liking “how involved they want to get people.” Freshmen are not taking for granted the increase in opportunities to get involved and to enjoy everything that West has available.
So, what are some of the opportunities they are taking advantage of? Many freshmen have already been enjoying the fall and winter sports seasons, participating in things like girl’s swim, cross country, basketball, cross country, and girls’ volleyball. There were lots in attendance at the homecoming olympics, homecoming game, and homecoming dance. Several clubs have also been popular, including Student Council, the West Gazette, Be the Change, Environmental Action Club, Best Buddies, and more.
Overall, it seems that the class of 2029 has been doing well with their first semester in high school. The year will only get better as they continue taking advantage of all the activities West has to offer and as they learn what it means to be a Warrior.
