Lincoln-Way West offers a wide selection of accessible courses that can set our students up for life. Many include those in the Career and Tech departments. Currently, some of the classes available involve automotive and welding, as well as construction, architecture, and woodworking. These classes are not exclusive to a certain career path; they are open to everyone and welcome newcomers. The courses have been successful in creating a well-rounded lifestyle for students and an overall engaging experience. Let us get down to why you should be taking these classes, especially the introductory courses.

At West, the Career and Tech department offers a selection of courses based on an interest in the trades. However, these classes also help students develop skills for a better quality of life in their future no matter what career they enter. The Automotive Mechanics and Small Engines classes take students through an introductory or rudimentary journey through the history and practicality of engines and cars. Students can learn hands-on skills that will save them money when making repairs on their own automobile or even on their friends and family’s cars or equipment. Students get to work on real clients’ vehicles as well as the shop cars, which are school issued. The students also get to rebuild engines, so they gain a full grasp of the principles of mechanics. The teachers really push the students to learn and develop important skills that many wish they had. The instructors are very personable and keep things simple yet valuable. In addition, each elective has its own designated workshop that allows for a real-world application of the trades. Those include a fully active auto shop, a welding shop, a wood shop, and lab rooms. Such courses like Auto also allow an everyday feel for on-the-job training at a pace that is manageable and exciting even if you are not that into cars.

Other selections include the welding courses, which provide an extensive training experience designed to instill the skills needed to weld safely and effectively. Welding 1 offers a friendly approach to the skill. It covers extensive safety and proper PPE (personal protective equipment), which help students enjoy the class while keeping safety as a top priority. So, if you enjoy tasks that are very useful, Welding 1 is highly recommended. Many things found in everyday life utilize such engineering from buildings to vehicles, tools and art. Once completed, students will have a lifelong skill with practical use and a variety of job opportunities.
Some other primary introductory courses include Woodworking and Construction Maintenance and Repair, as well as Computer Aided Design and Architecture. Each of these classes is a smart consideration when making course choices as these skills come in handy in some situations where hiring a worker may be time consuming and expensive. Students that consider these introductory courses will develop the necessary knowledge to successfully take care of a vehicle or care for their future houses, furniture, and household items.

The skills learned in these selected classes will ensure that students will be capable of handling basic problems in everyday life. Interested students can contact the teachers in that department. Whether you just heard about trades or have been involved for a while, these skills will last a lifetime to save time and money. The intro classes, whether for the short or the long term, are a Warrior must have.
