Finals are almost here and everyone has their own way of studying. For many students, studying is rarely done in silence. Whether it is quiet instrumental music or a favorite playlist, many students can be found with headphones on and earbuds in when it is time to study. These students listen to different genres from classical to hard rock. Opinions may be divided on whether or not this actually helps with concentration, but West students seem to agree that music helps with learning.
We asked 35 students at West if they listen to music while studying. Only 6% said that they never listen to anything while studying. 45% said they listen to music all the time while studying and 51% said they listen sometimes depending on what they are reviewing. But that means 96% of students have sound playing while studying during most of the school year. When asked what genres of music they listen to, responses were varied. About 50% of students responded that they listen to Pop music while studying. A close second were classical, rock, alternative, hip hop, and jazz. Not as popular were country, lo-fi, classic rock, heavy metal, folk, punk, R&B, and electronic. Only a few votes went to contemporary Christian and reggae. And one smart student said, “I don’t study.”
