Whether you approve or not, AI has continued to grow, and it seems like it is here to stay. Let’s look at some of the reasons why AI isn’t what everyone promises.
1.) AI Negatively Impacts the Environment and Economy:
Everyone has heard of the water consumption of AI, but did you know that there are more effects than just water? The resources it takes to build a datacenter drain the supply of resources. If a datacenter the size of New York City’s Central Park is built, it would take a lot of resources to build with wood, metal, wiring, electronics. That would dwindle the already limited supply of those supplies increasing prices of the goods. If the companies decide to not raise the prices of the goods, they will harvest more negatively affecting the environment and causing more global warming and deforestation. Therefore, a demand for more AI datacenters either ruin the environment through water usage and deforestation, or the prices of lumber and metal increase.

2.) AI is Ruining the Job Market
The CEOs of major AI companies often compete with each other to get ahead of the game and to be the most prominently used AI. But one thing they all agree on is that AI will replace most if not all white-collar jobs. For example, Elon Musk predicts that AI will replace work by 2030. He isn’t the only AI CEO claiming these things. This may sound like a good thing. No more 9-5 boring office work until you realize the only other path of good income would be blue collar work; The work AI can’t do. This would flood the job market causing nationwide job shortages. Not to mention that AI has already affected the Voice Acting industry replacing some actors. Eventually we could wind up becoming a jobless society or slaving ourselves away for a chatbot.

3.) AI is a Yes-Man
This may be a sensitive topic to some, but AI is a yes-man. It is fed from the information it’s given, and what it says is made to appeal to you. There is even a new term for AI-psychosis from how much it appeals to the user. For example, C.ai is an app where you can talk to fictional characters through chats and AI. Unfortunately, this has led to many children becoming dependent on these chat-bots. This dependency can lead to impacted intelligence, ability to think for oneself, and even their daily functions. This has sparked movements for AI chatbots to be limited to adults, as it is dangerous for children.
