MSA (Muslim Student Association) is a club open to all students at West. The Muslim Student Association aims to create a community and have discussions and educate one another on a variety of topics within Islam. They work on organizing events, celebrations, and field trips for the year, as well as community service projects. They have worked with the building administration to establish a prayer space in the building and have participated in an international potluck event with International Club and Better Together. They plan on celebrating the end of Ramadan with a Eid celebration and “food trip.” MSA provides a space within the LWW community for all students to learn more about Islamic culture and to make new friends.
An important time for this club is Ramadan. Islam is one of the world’s largest religions, only second to Christianity. Ramadan is a holy month observed by Muslims worldwide during which fasting, prayer and reflection are practiced for 30 days.
During Ramadan, it’s common practice for Muslims to fast by abstaining from food or drink from sunrise to sunset. At sunset, Muslims will gather to break fast with a shared meal called iftar. The end of Ramadan is marked by the celebration of Eid. Eid celebrations include charity, parties, food and gift giving.
