Twenty-two writers from The West Gazette listened to local news media reporters and editors discuss their careers at the SWSC newspaper conference. The speakers included Demetrius Ivory (WGN), Lexi Sutter (NBC), Courtney Scott (CBS), and Eric Siegel (ABC).
Freshman Madeline Murphy won first place in the opinion category for her article “Should Cell Phones Be Allowed in Schools?” and freshman Annabelle Fazekas won third place in the news category for her article “Block Blast: The Game Taking Over the School.”
The students loved getting to experience a field trip outside of school, meet students from other schools, visit another school, eat something different, and hear from professionals in a field they may join in the future. They were especially excited to meet meteorologist Demetrius Ivory, and look forward to next year’s conference.
