Student athletes are a major part of our school community. They represent our school through their dedication, teamwork, and hard work in a variety of sports. While many people see student athletes competing during games, there is much more that goes on behind the scenes to balance both athletics and academics.
One of the biggest challenges student athletes face is managing their time. Practices, games, and team meetings often take place after school and sometimes on weekends. Despite these commitments, student athletes are still expected to keep up with homework, projects, and tests just like any other student. Many athletes say that learning to stay organized and plan ahead is necessary in order to avoid falling behind in their classes.
I asked eight students how they manage their time, and all responded that they try to finish most of their homework at school. Many spend time before school, during their advisory hours and lunch, or even on the bus. One student replied, “I am a swimmer. I get my work done during the school day when I can and finish any homework as soon as I get home. Being in sports has helped with my time management.” Another said, “I make sure to sleep enough. Being in softball affects my time management because I have to put aside designated time for homework, friends, and family.”
In addition to time management, student athletes develop strong life skills through sports. Teamwork is one of the most important lessons learned, as athletes must work together towards a common goal. Sports also teach discipline and responsibility, since athletes are expected to attend practices, follow team rules, and stay committed throughout the season. These skills often carry over into the classroom, helping athletes stay focused and motivated in their academic work. Some of the students who responded agree that they do not have a job or try to get more sleep to help them stay focused on their sport and school.
Student athletes also play a large role in promoting school spirit. Sporting events bring students, teachers, and families together to support their teams. The effort and determination shown by athletes can inspire other students to get involved in sports or attend school events. This sense of unity helps strengthen the overall school community. Many agree that students have strong school spirit at West.
Another important part of being a student athlete is maintaining academic eligibility. Athletes must meet grade requirements in order to compete, which encourages them to prioritize their education. Many student athletes take advantage of resources such as tutoring, study halls, or help from teachers to stay on track academically. This could be why many students say that they spend their free time at school completing their homework and don’t take on a job.
Although balancing sports and school can be stressful at times, student athletes continue to show dedication both on and off the field. Their commitment, perseverance, and leadership make them valuable members of the school. Student athletes prove every day that success is not just measured by wins and losses, but also by effort, growth, and responsibility.
