At Lincoln-Way West, lunch is actually a pretty big deal, especially the soup. Having a good lunch helps everyone stay focused, energized, be in a better mood, and it makes a real difference in how people feel and perform at school. One of the foods that is popular among teachers at West is the soup.
Teachers get excited when the soup emails finally arrive after the hot weather has subsided. Two days a week from October through March, West offers stuffed pepper, cream of chicken with rice, minestrone, broccoli with cheese, chicken dumpling, lemon chicken, bacon and cheese potato, chicken noodle, tomato bisque, and chili.
Karen Burian, West Cafeteria Supervisor, says that “as far as the favorite soups of staff and students – any cream soup or the chicken noodle (is most popular). They love those. On occasion, I will try a new soup, but if it isn’t a hit, I won’t order it again.”
The soup always comes with a packet of oyster crackers. If someone likes a lot of crackers in their soup, they do sell extra packets. When they serve chili, they always offer a small cup of shredded cheese and sometimes sour cream. You could always pair your soup with the other foods the cafeteria offers, like grilled cheese, bread, and salad.
While the soup is popular among teachers, it is not as popular with the 61 students who responded to a survey. Only 75% said they have had the soup at West. When asked which soups they like the most, the top three favorites of students are chicken noodle, cream of chicken, chicken dumpling, and potato in that order. When asked which soups they wish the cafeteria sold, some answers were egg drop soup, French onion, Italian wedding, meatball, wild rice, and cream of cauliflower.
To the 28% of students who have not yet tried the soup, take a chance and taste one of the popular flavors. You won’t regret it. And as one student said, “Just flood the cafeteria with soup.”
