Huda F are You? What an interesting title. That was my first thought when picking up this book. Huda Fahmy is a Muslim high school student trying to figure out the ultimate question every high schooler asks themselves; who am I? Huda just moved to Michigan with her family and her new high school will change everything for her. At her last school she was unique; she was the only Muslim. That’s the opposite at her new school as it consists of a large Muslim population. Huda went from standing out to blending in.
Growing up with four sisters, Huda only ever saw herself as being the “smart” sister. Beyond being academically smart, Huda doesn’t know herself. Huda needs to get good grades to go to college, but is the pressure getting to her? At her old school, being Muslim and being smart were her identity. Moving to Michigan, she knew she had to make some changes. Plan A is to make new friends. Mission failed! Huda does make some big realizations, though. Huda learns who she really is during her friendship making journey. All along, Huda needed acceptance from others, her “friends”, family, and teachers. Huda starts on a journey at the end of the school year learning who the person is that she wants to become!
This book was a fun, fast read! The graphic novel element of the book gives the readers a deep dive into Huda’s brain and the person she is. Huda F are You? is a thought-provoking book that I recommend. This book is also a part of West’s 2024-2025 Read for a Lifetime program, so check it out!
