Caffeine is an essential part of any highschooler’s morning. Whether it’s through coffee, an energy drink, tea, or refreshers, almost every modern-day teenager consumes caffeine regularly.
With 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. school starting times, homework, jobs, and extracurriculars, many students feel the need for an energy boost. Caffeine is proven to help individuals feel more alert and focused. Because of this, students will often consume caffeinated beverages daily.
However, there are downsides to consider when drinking caffeine regularly. Caffeine is a stimulant, and while it provides energy, it can also lead to negative side effects. Overdoing it on caffeine can make people feel jittery, create anxiousness, and create heart palpitations. For high school students, whose bodies are still developing, these side effects can be dangerous.
Additionally, caffeine can interfere with sleep patterns. For busy teens who already struggle to get their 8-10 hours of sleep, this is less than ideal. Beverages from places such as Starbucks and Dunkin, although convenient and popular, range from $5-$9. This financial factor is also an issue for many students.
