Thrifted hauls can be seen throughout Tik Tok. The resale apparel market is expected to grow to 51 billion in revenue in 2026 from 14 billion in 2021. Why? Younger consumers are more conscious about what they buy due to less disposable income. What do West students have to say about this? Twenty-one students from Lincoln-Way West were surveyed and here are the results.
When asked how often they shop at thrift stores, most students at West go once a month or once a week. Five respondents rarely shop at thrift stores and two students said that they go daily. Seventeen of the 21 students surveyed prefer a combination of new and used clothing. Most purchase these items to wear, while only two resell the items and seven repurpose or upcycle.
When asked their reason for shopping at secondhand stores, the majority said it was cheaper, they prefer vintage looks, and that it was more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Popular local places to shop for previously owned items are Plato’s Closet, Savers, Morning Star, and Goodwill. One student even makes the trip to shop at an antique/thrift store in Morris called McManiacs Vintage & Antique Mall. The types of items that students look for are hoodies, sweaters, shirts, pants, jeans, belts, room décor, expensive brands, and shoes.
Junior Gianna DePersia commented that “It’s a great way to save money and reuse clothes that could possibly be in perfect condition still.” Others said it was a great way to save money and you can find more unique pieces. So, if you haven’t tried thrifting, join the movement.
