Christian Hirschboeck

At long last, we have reached the winter edition of my Sports in Review column. It feels like forever since my fall edition, but I’m extremely glad to be able to write this piece. I will be covering all achievements from our very competitive athletics programs here at West.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team picked up where they left off last season, winning their half of the conference over a strong Lincoln-Way Central team, while finishing the season with an impressive 13 and 3 record. Coach White had this to say: “The girls basketball team was excited to get a modified season in this year. We finished 13-3, and were able to win conference, which is nice with no state playoffs. Great work this year girls!

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team was situated in a tough conference but managed to stay competitive all season. Sadly, the program will be graduating five seniors, including star guard Connor Jenkins. Connor shared his thoughts with us following senior night: “I really enjoyed playing with this group of guys this year. We competed at a high level game in and game out, beating some good teams along the way. Even though the year was short, it was very enjoyable all thanks to my teammates and coaching staff.” Although West is losing several consistent starters, we look forward to a new group of skilled underclassmen taking over.

Cheer

With COVID heavily limiting every sport that involved any form of contact, many were unsure of if there would even be a cheer season. Come March, the cheer team combated that uncertainty with consistent performances and a third-place finish at state. We couldn’t have expected anything more from the team and we’re proud of everything they’ve done and will continue to do. Congratulations

Dance

Our competitive dance team continued to showcase their hard work once again this yearSimilar to last year, and seemingly becoming a reoccurring event, they made it all the way to the state competition. The girls worked tirelessly to prove once again that they are amongst the best in Illinois competitive dance. Finishing fourth is no small feat. Congratulations, girls!

Girls Bowling

COVID did not stop the girls bowling team from continuing their dominance in their conference. On top of that, both varsity and junior varsity won their individual Lincoln-Way Cup trophies. Great job, girls!

 Boys Bowling

Like the girls’ team, COVID would do very little to stop this team from performing, as both varsity and junior varsity would also win the Lincoln-Way Cup. Junior Aidan Healy had this to say: “The season went well. Our team didn’t have the highest expectations going into the year, but we couldn’t have had a better season. We won conference and the Lincoln-Way cup. I had a strong finish to the year as well, as I won the individual conference title and the individual high series for the Lincoln-Way Cup. I am looking forward to us being competitive yet again next year.”

Girls Gymnastics

Congratulations to girls gymnastics for winning the SWSC conference title. Junior Olivia Gonda was 3rd in vault and 2nd in bars; junior Jenna Krystyniak took 2nd in bars. You’ve done an excellent job continuing the tradition of excellence in LW gymnastics!

Badminton

In both singles and doubles, our badminton team flaunted their talents with several high placements in conference and in the SWSC Badminton Tournament. The girls individually earned two third place finishes in both second and fourth singles. Also, the girls landed in second place at four doubles for conference. Great work from everyone on both doubles and singles!
