Let’s start with a definition. What is swing? Swing, as described by Studio 88 Swing, is “a musical characteristic of a certain type of jazz, which rhythmical and melodic presence makes you want to dance!”

The Lockport Swing Thing is a fantastic, family friendly way to spend your Tuesday night. They are usually hosted at The Roxy Event Venue or the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery. Each night begins with an hour beginner lesson, taught by Noah and Ronni, and intermediate lesson, taught by RJ and Jessica. Both lessons start at 6 p.m. and go to 7 p.m. After that there are two hours of social dancing.

Swing dancing is a great experience, and I would highly recommend trying it. It’s a perfect event to attend with family, friends, or significant others. Careful though, it’s addictive!

If you’re interested in going but have a few questions, here are some of the most commonly asked questions:

How much does it cost?” It’s free! Though donations are greatly appreciated.

What should I wear?” I personally prefer to dress the part and wear a retro-style dress, but other than that anything you can comfortably move in.

What shoes should I bring?” I would not recommend shoes with rubber soles or any type of sandals, something that has a somewhat wide, low heel. Keds are very popular.

What is the age range?” All ages are welcome!

For more information, The Lockport Swing Thing is present on most social media and they also have a website: https://www.thelockportswingthing.com/.

Hope to see you swing!
